Another week, another episode of The Walking Dead! In this episode, we rejoin the aftermath of King Ezekiel’s ambush by The Saviors. Keep on reading for a full recap along with my thoughts on this weeks action!

We begin the episode back inside the safe walls of The Kingdom, where we see King Ezekiel and his fighters preparing to go to battle and carry out their part of the operation to help capture the guns that Rick and Daryl are chasing.
Skipping forward in time after the opening credits, we see the aftermath of The Saviors ambush on King Ezekiel. The majority of The King’s fighting force is now dead and limbless, however, The King manages to crawl out from under his human bodyguards to find that he’s been shot in the leg. The dead start to turn and Ezekiel stumbles and crawls away before being found by a survivor of the attack who helps him get a bit further.
As with all random survivors, he gets shot and a low-level member of The Saviors takes Ezekiel captive with the intention of delivering him alive to Negan. They get backed into a corner by walkers and just as he’s about to take Ezekiel’s head off to deliver to Negan, our random Saviour gets split in half by Jerry’s giant axe, in what is one of the most brutal deaths of the season so far, however, this doesn’t change the fact that they’re cornered.
Meanwhile, we cut over to Carol who is inside the compound, sneaking around. She finds herself trapped with Saviors around the corner in each direction (carrying the big body-maiming guns), so she does what any normal person would and hides in the ceiling tiles before shooting all of The Saviors dead below her. The attracts the attention of another group within the compound who start to chase Carol but they decide getting the guns to Negan is more important.
Carol follows this group out of the compound and opens fire before finding herself cornered again. She finds a button that opens a gate behind The Saviors letting in a flood of Walkers. This allows Carol to pin down the last two Saviors behind the car with the guns in. Just as she’s about to creep up on them, she notices that Ezekiel and Jerry are pinned against a nearby fence, leaving her stuck on where she needs to be.
Being the compassionate person she is, she chooses to help King Ezekiel and Jerry while the last of The Saviors escape in the truck with guns and start driving towards The Sanctuary. Not all is lost though, as we see Daryl and Rick give chase. After a short chase scene, Rick manages to jump from his car to the other and runs the car off the road securing the guns into Ricks possession.
Finally, we cut back to Carol, Jerry and Ezekiel walking back through the woods towards The Kingdom where they once again get overwhelmed by Walkers. Shiva arrives on the knick of time to rescue our trio, however, get’s overwhelmed in the process by a growing number of walkers as Ezekiel looks on. Rest In Piece, Shiva.
Well, what a great episode! Although I’ve enjoyed the start of this season so far, there’s been no narrative or locational anchor until this week. In previous episodes, we’ve seen where each group is individually, but not in comparison to the others. However, we know now why Rick wanted those guns so badly!
I think my favourite scene of the night was the car chase. It was a classic high octane, Spielberg-esque car chase with Rick pulling some full-on Indiana Jones action moves before the car swerves off the road, only for Rick to appear out of the bushes.
I also loved that we saw a bit more of what keeps Ezekiel going and how that started to unravel slightly. It was great to see him preparing for his ‘role’ as King at the start of the episode, playing off his “Fake it ’til you make it!” line from earlier in the season.
As far as negatives go, I wish that we could have seen Rick and Daryl’s approach to the compound as last week they were still stood by their vehicles about to move, but there was no sense of urgency.
Overall, this was a fantastic episode, with some great scenes for everyone involved. I just really hope it keeps up this way now!
